Curly said it best.
“You know what the secret of life is? … One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don’t mean shit.”
Needlesstosay, Curly’s a hero of mine.
So what is that “one thing?”
Well I’m sure Curly meant something deep, meaningful and philosophic, but I’m going to boil it down to something so stupidly simple, it’s probably going to piss you off.
And yet this one little secret is so simple you probably never use it.
The secret to success in any area is:
Shut the Fuck Up and Just Do It
Okay, I know like half of you just bolted for the door but stop and think for a second. How much of your day is spent “just doing it” ?
(Your 13 year old self just laughed, don’t lie)
How much time during your day do you spend actually doing the things that matter?
How much time do you waste doing nothing?
How much time do you spend doing “work” that doesn’t make you more money or grow your business in any way?
If you’re honest the answers are:
A) a little
B) a lot
C) a whole lot
Doing It: Less of an Art. More of a Pain
Being creative and prolific is a pain in the ass. No joke.
If you’re a blogger, the hardest thing you’re ever going to do is sit down and actually blog.
If you’re an artist, the hardest thing you’re ever going to do is start painting.
And yet it’s not reading blogging books that’s going to grow your business or make you money. It’s not painting classes that are going to get you into a gallery.
It’s actually doing your work.
It’s pumping out blog posts and paintings that are going to mean shit at the end of it all.
Yeah, so 99 out of the 100 things you produced was pure shit. Who cares?
You got that one.
And you shipped.
Real artists ship.
Seth Godin is Always (Annoyingly) Right
So now it’s crunch time.
What are you avoiding?
What are you putting off until tomorrow (next week)?
Need to post on the blog?
Need to be awesome on Twitter?
Need to work on that eBook?
What is it you’re resisting? Because that is the one thing you should be running at full force. The one thing you should be tackling day in and day out.
Fuck what that little voice in your head tells you to do, the Xbox and Tivo will always be there.
So are you ready to get down to it?
And if not, have you ever stopped to wonder why?
Why most people stop blogging after, like, three posts?
Why most artist end up with “real” jobs?
It’s because they don’t shut the fuck up and do what needs to be done. They are ruled by the “want to.”
Don’t be ruled by your “want to’s”
Shut up and stick to that one thing. Everything else don’t mean shit.
